Why does creating an accessible website matter?

Most likely, you know someone who has some form of a disability, whether it is visual, auditory, or cognitive. This is because up to 1 in 4 adults in the United States are living with some kind of disability. Since more and more people have accessibility needs, it is important for businesses to know what they are and make their websites accessible for all.

Your site should work for everyone. If not, people will move on to the next one. Taking steps towards an accessible website is a great way to demonstrate inclusivity and opens doors to a larger audience. And with this tax credit available, there’s never been a better time to start optimizing your website.

There are many important reasons to have an accessible website. These include:

  • Legal Compliance & Defense: Laws such as the Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 require specific guidelines for all sites. If these are not met, there is the potential for legal complications.
  • User Experience: Accessible sites improve the user experience for all, not just those that are impaired.
  • SEO Benefits: Accessibility is a factor Google considers when ranking.
  • Brand Reputation: Inclusive brand and competitive edge over companies that do not prioritize accessibility.
  • Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion: An ADA Compliant site shows that your company is supportive of different groups of individuals, including those with disabilities.

How much will this cost me?

Since this is such an important action for businesses to take, incentives are available to help small businesses cover the cost. Under section 44 of the IRS Code, businesses will be entitled to $5,000 in credit. The great news is there is a tax credit available that will cover 50% of the eligible access expenditures made during the previous tax year.

Details: Contact your CPA to see which business solutions can be covered by the tax credit

  • The maximum expenditure limit is $10,250
  • No credit is available for the first $250
  • The highest amount of credit a business can receive is $5,000

How can I qualify?

This is available to all businesses that:

  • Have generated $1,000,000 or less during the year prior
  • Employ 30 or fewer full-time employees

Does my tax credit carry over from year to year?

  • Can be applied for and earned on an annual basis
  • Expenditures may not be carried over from the previous year to claim a credit that exceeded the expenditure limit from the year before
  • If the credit amount you’re entitled to exceeds the amount of taxes that you owe, you are allowed to roll the unused portion of the credit forward into the next year
